African Institute of Mathematical Sciences Rwanda
The centre is ideally positioned to respond to current and emerging trends/challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and food security. Recently, a COVID-19 pool testing method was developed and has been successfully used by Rwanda and beyond, to track people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as to identify possible asymptomatic people within communities. This algorithm was developed by the AIMS Research team, under the leadership of Prof Wilfred Ndifon, the AIMS Chief Scientific Officer, in partnership with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC).

Tuition
- There is no cost to attend. Every admitted student receives a full scholarship covering TRAVEL, room and board as well as tuition — AIMS is the only institution in this directory that also pays to get you there, which removes the barrier that stops most talented African graduates studying outside their home country. There is no separate scholarship application: funding is automatic on admission. The barrier is entirely academic — AIMS centres are extremely selective and recruit Africa's strongest mathematics graduates. A Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program also runs at the centre. FULLY FUNDED: AIMS reports 100% scholarships for 100% of accepted students, covering tuition, accommodation, meals and research bursaries for admitted Pan-African fellows. If accurate this is the only full-ride offer in the Rwandan data — confirm the current terms directly, because it changes the cost calculation entirely.
Admissions
- A university degree in mathematics or a mathematically-based subject.
- AIMS is explicitly pan-African, drawing students from 43 African countries; whether non-African applicants are eligible is not stated.
- The programme is fully residential — you live at the centre alongside peers from across the continent for the duration, in what AIMS calls a 24-hour learning environment. Be sure that suits you before applying.
- It is demanding by design: within each three-week block you must master a new topic and complete a series of assignments, on top of two hours of instruction per course daily plus an hour of English or computing.
- Accepts international applicants
- Scholarships or financial aid available
